Sometimes I just write a song for the fun of it. A crazy idea comes into my head, or I want to share something that makes me laugh. All of the songs in "Droptop Delta 88" fit that description. I hope you have as much fun listening to them as I had writing and recording them.

None of these recordings would have been possible without my Producer, Collaborator and Friend, Michael Cohen of Signature Studio. My thanks to him for his skill, his ideas and his undying patience throughout this project!

Droptop Delta 88

A song about a 1975 Classic Cruiser: the same car I'm driving in the cartoon below. My rockabilly band, "Ike & the Road Rocket Rebels" joined me for this session: Floyd on bass, Waylon on the Telecaster, and Ray-Bob on drums.

Kokopelli

Play Recording

Here's a story about a young fellow who invokes the aid of that mythical southwestern flute player, the impish Kokopelli, to win over his heart's desire, the lovely Manalita. That strange beat is because the song is written in 5/4 time (or 10/8 if don't mind taking off both shoes).

There is a theory that, for some women, a new pair of shoes is an instant pick-me-up. I've long wondered if there is something similar for guys. Driving to work one Monday morning, it suddenly came to me and I had to write a song about it. Hopefully it works for guys in Jamaica too, because I wrote it as a reggae song.

Second Kick of a Mule

Play Recording

Some years ago, I decided to write a Honky Tonk song. The idea just sat for a while until I heard a quote from the late Sam Rayburn, Speaker of the U. S. House of Representatives for most of the years between 1940 and 1961. When his party started talking about running Adlai Stevenson against Dwight Eisenhower again in 1956, he said, "There is no education in the second kick of a mule." Now, if that ain't Honky Tonk, I don't know what is: this song grew from that quote!

Practicing

Play Recording

Many years ago now, at a concert by a friend and very fine songwriter, Tracy Feldman, I was watching him play his guitar. I was amazed by his lightning-fast hands and long fingers. The next morning, at the breakfast table, this song just flowed out.

Places To Go

Listening to the car radio one day, I realized that these days we hear so much Urban Attitude and never any Suburban Attitude. I wrote this song just to even things up a bit.

Zamboni Man

A song about paths not taken, and a modern sports-cultural icon. I get happy just saying the name!

"Droptop Delta 88" is one of four themed collections of my original songs and arrangements on this website. All of the recordings on this website are presented in MP3 format which compromises sound slightly in return for download efficiency. I offer the same four collections in a 2-CD set called "The Dwight Album" for $15 (including delivery). If you would like to buy a copy of "The Dwight Album", click on Contact Me to email me.
